Holding On to the Unchanging God
As we reach the final week of our Faith in Transition series, we focus on a truth that doesn’t shift with time, culture, or circumstances: Jesus Christ never changes. When life is in flux—when churches face decisions, families adjust to new realities, and personal seasons shift—it is the unchanging nature of our Savior that holds us steady.
Hebrews 13:8 (CSB) tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” These words may be familiar, but they take on fresh meaning in times of transition. They remind us that despite unpredictable things, Christ remains unshakably dependable. The same Jesus who walked with the disciples walks with us today. The same grace that saved us yesterday is still sufficient today. The same promise He made never to leave us stands firm forever.
Our world is constantly moving—technology advances, families grow or grieve, churches evolve in structure and mission, leadership transitions, cultural norms shift, and even our personal roles change—student to graduate, employee to retiree, parent to empty nester. But in all of this, Jesus remains our anchor.
Scripture speaks clearly to this enduring truth. In Lamentations 3:22-23, written amid national sorrow and personal lament, the prophet Jeremiah declares:
“Because of the Lord’s faithful love, we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!”
Even when everything around him had fallen apart, Jeremiah clung to this: God’s mercy doesn’t run out. It’s new each day, because God doesn’t change.
Similarly, Numbers 23:19 says,
“God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill?”
These verses anchor us in a God who is not fickle or forgetful. He doesn’t say one thing and do another. When God speaks, He acts. When He promises, He delivers. His character is the bedrock of our trust.
This is incredibly comforting for the Church. Over the last century, Union Avenue Baptist Church has endured many seasons—booming growth, urban shifts, leadership changes, ministry expansions, and challenges in a changing Memphis community. Through those moments, God’s hand has held us fast. And in our current season of prayerful discernment—whether ministry decisions, community involvement, or development of small groups—we do so with the confidence that our Savior is not shifting. He remains faithful to His Church.
This Sunday, we will not only open the Word together to reflect on these truths but also come to the Communion table. Communion is our powerful reminder of Christ’s unchanging love—the body broken, the blood poured out. We take the bread and cup as a community in transition, anchored in a gospel that never wavers. It’s an act of remembrance but also of recommitment to the One who never lets go.
If you’ve been walking through a season of personal uncertainty—experienced loss, new beginnings, unexpected shifts, or spiritual questions—know this: You are not alone and adrift. You are held by the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Let’s close this series together in worship. Come and be reminded that you don’t have to have everything figured out—you have to hold onto the One who does not change.
We invite you to worship with us this Sunday at Union Avenue Baptist Church—2181 Union Avenue at 10:45 am—or online at unionavenue.org. Let’s gather, remember, and rejoice in the One who is the same forever.
